Trabzonspor have started the year on an absurd run, collecting 30 points in 12 matches. Karadeniz Fırtınası - the Black Sea Storm, A+++ nickname - ended last year with 71 points, their highest total in a decade. A mid-table club as recently as 2015-16 when they finished 12th, the The current Süper Lig leaders have built an impressive run in the last three years, twice finishing fourth and securing second place in 2019-20 (they finished four points behind the champions Başakşehir).
This year the club is getting it done on both ends of the pitch with a league-high 24 goals scored and just 11 goals allowed. The run hasn’t just been against the chaff with decisive victories over Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe and draws against 4th place Galatasaray and 3rd place Konyaspor. Despite the big point total, there are not a significant number of big scorers. Only six players currently have L15 scores of 50+ points, and the scoring of actual goals and assists has been concentrated in just three players. All of this means there will be fewer players included in this scouting report but we should have confidence in these players to continue delivering SO5 value.
Uğurcan Çakır - GK, age 25
A young GK that already has over 100 league starts for his current club, a contract that runs through 2025, the captains armband, and better than a handful of caps for Turkey is the resume of a player to target. Çakır fits the bill if you’re looking to pay for consistency and the regular starts - 38 TSL starts last term and 33 the year before - coupled with a sufficient number of Decisive-drive 60+ point scores limit the risk.
I am a bit concerned that in 2019-20 he kept only four clean sheets in 33 starts despite allowing only 40 goals (1.25/90’), but last years TSL total of 13 is sufficient to justify the cost.
